A small number of pharmacies in South Tyneside provide facilities where you can exchange used needles for new ones. We’re trying to help keep you safe at the needle exchange and reduce of equipment among injecting drug users.
This is a strictly confidential service. We want to protect your health by reducing high risk injecting behaviours. Needle exchange pharmacies provide safe disposal facilities for used injecting equipment.
The service team can support you by prescribing substitute medication for your opiate dependence.
We’ll introduce you to a local pharmacy. Staff there can offer you further support by supervising you taking this medication in a safe, professional, and confidential environment.
We’ll discuss with you what you can expect from the pharmacy and also what the pharmacy will expect of you. It’s all about mutual respect – behaving in a courteous manner towards pharmacy staff, attending the pharmacy alone, and accepting that pharmacy staff are likely to ask for proof of ID.
